Press Releases

2nd Annual ‘Restaurant Give-Back’ Offering with Rocco’s!

Walnut Creek, CA August 25, 2008

SCARF announced today that Rocco’s Pizzeria has offered to support SCARF on October 23, 2008 by donating 25% of it’s net proceeds to benefit SCARF. In the fall of 2006, prior to the announcement of SCARF, Mary’s Pizza Shack opened it’s doors to help Sherri Tennant in her battle with Melanoma. Unfortunately Sherri lost her battle with cancer, but her spirit and value to give to the community lives on through SCARF. www/scarfusa.com . You can help the mission of SCARF by simply ‘dining in’ or ordering ‘take-out’ at Rocco’s Pizzeria on Thursday October 23rd. Rocco’s is located in the Encina Plaza on Ygnacio Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek.

SCARF was created as a legacy for Sherri Kelley Tennant who was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, in 1996. Then in 2005 she had a recurrence as the melanoma returned in her liver. Sherri was an oncology nurse and worked locally in Walnut Creek helping others with cancer. Her recurrence metastasized and eventually took her life in 2006. Her extensive research has been recreated in SCARF so that others may become educated about this form of skin cancer and treatment options.

Receiving their Federal Tax ID number in 2007 allowed the Board of Directors to put focus on a redesign of the website that now includes opportunities for individuals and corporations to make donations in a variety of ways. Individuals & Corporate donors can dedicate their contribution in memory of someone or simply have their name on a ‘Dedication Wall’.

“These are exciting times for our Foundation and the entire staff is excited to see the hard work coming together”, states founder and CEO, Jim Tennant. “We hope to gain momentum this year with a winter event and focus our efforts on recruitment and planning for 2008”. So far to date, SCARF has participated in the Art & Wine Festival in Walnut Creek, and hope to have a Golf Tourney, Dinner Benefit and Tea Party in the upcoming months.

It’s the goal of SCARF to become nationally recognized as the Foundation that can help provide individuals information about early detection and treatment options. As research continues, new protocols are being established and hope for people living with melanoma continues.

SCARF Participates in Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival

Walnut Creek, CA June 2nd, 2008

SCARF announced today that it had successfully participated in the Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival this past weekend. On Saturday & Sunday, May 31st & June 1st, over 100,000 people visited and enjoyed over 80 booths at the Art & Wine Festival hosted by the WC Chamber of Commerce. The SCARF 10’ x 10 booth was positioned in the main aisle amongst other popular business and art booths. The Chamber of Commerce provided Deschutes premium IPA and Pale Ale beer to pour for the thirsty visitors. “We had over 20 volunteers working the booth, helping pour beer and most importantly describing what SCARF was all about. This inaugural event was perfect for our cause- providing awareness to our community”, describes Jim Tennant, founder of SCARF. A pair of Coach sunglasses where donated by Dr. Michael Roy, local optometrist of Walnut Creek. SCARF was supplying free sunscreen for those stopping by the booth, which was perfect for the sunny warm day. This event will hopefully be one of many events SCARF plans on participating in. More events planned for later this year.
